Abstract

The author basically deconstructs the debate on quality and effectiveness of sport, development and peace programmes across the world. In her own words ‘this chapter discusses the claims of finding common and universally applicable indicators and monitoring tools in the field of S&D against the backdrop of its actual transferability into practice. The subsequent deliberations synthesise theoretical considerations with practical experiences made by the Swiss Academy for Development (SAD) through various pilot projects, research and capacity building of grassroots organisations in Asia, South America, the Middle East and Africa in the last years’. The author achieves this by describing the theoretical approaches to project planning, monitoring and evaluation. We found this interesting as many programmes require constant evaluation and argue that they are monitoring effectively but in actuality this is not the case in practice. What she argues in this chapter is the need for theory to inform practice and for ‘outcome mapping’, ‘creativity’ and increased awareness that monitoring and evaluation of sports programmes is highly relevant in the building of social capital in areas which are culturally sensitive.
