Abstract

The ankle is one of the most commonly injured peripheral joints, and appropriate rehabilitation can minimize both the extent of injury and time away from activity. Although much variability exists, most ankle rehabilitation programs include strengthening exercises to aid in improving ankle stability and, most commonly, lateral stability. Rehabilitation strengthening exercises for the peroneus longus (PL) specifically often use resistive bands or cuff weights with motions performed open-chain and with the uniplanar movement of eversion. However, data clearly suggest that the primary biomechanical function of the PL is not uniplanar, nor is it open-chain eversion. This lack of congruence between exercise training and biomechanical function may limit the effectiveness of ankle rehabilitation and -thus warrants another look at the function of the PL. Einleitung
