Abstract

The second volume of the collection explores "The Mixed Economy of Sport and Leisure Provision" across five sections. First, the rather peculiar case of professional sport is adressed, with the selection of articles illustrating that there are both similarities and differences in the operation of professional sport, particularly between Europe and North America. Second, the varying role of the state in sport and leisure is explored, from a welfare model for social goals to a public subsidy model based on urban boosterism and perceived economic benefits. Third, the role and motivations of the not-for-profit sector are adressed. Fourth, the contribution of the commercial sector is explored, including that of entrepreneurs, sponsors and goods manufacturers. Finally, the role of the education sector in providing sport and sport-related leisure is adressed, together with some of the policy goals for sport in education. Aus der Einleitung (leicht geändert)
