Abstract

The ancient sources for the date of the first Pythian Games held at Delphi do not appear to agree. Modern scholars are likewise at odds, some opting for 586 and others for 582 BC. A fresh reading of the relevant scholium to Pindar’s Pythian 3 suggests that a reconsideration of the chronology is called for, and this paper advances a new hypothesis to explain the appparent discrepancies discernible in the evidence. In 586 BC the citharodic contest became a musical one, taking in new disciplines, and by virtue of that act the Pythian Games were founded. However, the official reckoning by Pythiads only began in 582, when the Amphictyones made the game stephanitic, thus conferring upon them the full prestige that they thenceforth enjoyed. Les sources permettant de fixer la date des premiers Pythia de Delphes ne semblent pas concorder, aussi les commentateurs modernes se partagent-ils entre 586 et 582 av.J.-C. La relecture de la scholie à la Ilf Pythique de Pindare nous invite repenser la chronologie et à proposer une nouvelle hypothèse pour expliquer la dissonance des témoignages. En 586 le concours citharodique devient musical, en intégrant de nouvelles disciplines, et c'est l'acte de fondation du concours pythique. Mais c'est bien en 582 que débute le calendrier officiel des Pythia, à une date où le concours est à nouveau stéphanite et que par là-même il acquiert tout son prestige.
