Abstract

The aim of the survey was to identify and evaluate development of young men’s physical parameters, factual nutrition, depletion and the need of energy. The study was carried out in 2008-2010, Vilnius Pedagogical University. Biology, physical education and psychology studies students (n = 84) took part in the study. Height and weight measurements were made by using medical electronic weighing-machine with high gauge. We analyzed the average daily meal energy value, carbohydrate, protein, fat consumption, consumption and demand of energy. The average daily ration of food energy value, carbohydrate, protein, fat intake; physical activity and energy demand is analyzed using a 7-day diet and physical activity diaries, filled out by students participating in the study (20.35 ± 0.99 years). Most of the young men had normal body weight (69.05 percent), 26.19 percent were above the normal range, and 4.76 percent – insufficient. Physical activity of individuals intending to be pedagogues is high (physical activity coefficient 1.79 ± 0.382). Diet average energy value is adequate (p = 0.684) for energy waste, but less than 974.52 kcal (p < 0.001) for energy demand. There is unbalanced ratio of the main nutrients – protein, fat and carbohydrate in young men’s daily diet. 27.38 percent of young men consume too much proteins, 1.19 percent of them exceed the recommended daily dose of proteins twice. Our survey shows that only 7.14 percent of students get enough fat, 36.91 percent consume too much, and 55.95 percent – too little, but interests are nearby norm. Our survey shows that the shortage of carbohydrates is observed in the dietary intake of 95.24 percent young men’s daily food ration, in 34.52 percent of young men the amount of carbohydrates is under normal more than twice. Compared with the individual rates of these materials (taking into account the respondent’s body mass, age and physical activity), young men consume too much protein (p < 0.05), receivable fat intake correspond with the recommended intake (p = 0.663), in daily diet there is lack of carbohydrates (p < 0.001).
