Abstract des BISp

Abstract des Autors

The Brazilian Team for the Olympic Games in Berlin 1936 For the first time in the history of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) the Brazilians sent an Olympic team to the Berlin Games in 1936. It had been a big surprise for the organisers when two Brazilian teams arrived instead of one. One was sent by and had the support of the COB, which had been founded in 1935 and accepted by the IOC. The second team was sent by the Brazilian Sports Confederation (CBD), which had been the traditional Brazilian organisation for sports since 1914. The president of the CBD was Luis Aranha, who had a strong connection with the fascist first regime of Getulio Vargas (until 1937) and at the same time with the immigrants of southern Brazil. The two teams were unified by the organisers of the Berlin Games. Nevertheless the question arises why the team of the CBD was accepted at all. Was it because of their participants? It is known that especially the German descendants in Brazil were organised in tough sports organisations such as the influential “Deutscher Turn- und Sportverein Rio de Janeiro”. This association was closely connected to the “Deutscher Reichsbund fur Leibesübungen” of the Third Reich. There are clear signs of direct influence on the Brazilian team of the CBD by the Nazis. It was of great interest to see Germans from abroad participating in the Olympic Games of 1936. And of course they should get the support of the Third Reich, for example by integrating them into the official Brazilian team.
