Abstract

The dictionary is based on two preconditions, which justify its publication. Sport as a part system of almost any society, physical education as a fundamental education approach, and sport science as a fast developing academic discipline are representing a threefold issue which is well known, much discussed, and highly relevant in the world today. Today, the English language has gained a similar importance as a world language and has become the major communication avenue all across the world. The world of science also mainly relies on the English language when it has to deal on an international level. Nevertheless, the English language has also variations in different parts of the world which could not always be considered in this dictionary. The following features are characteristic for this dictionary: The terms included in the dictionary relate to theory and practice of movement, play, and sport. Therefore sport, physical education, and sport science are the main content areas of this dictionary. The selection of the approximately 2,000 terms is based on a frequency analysis of the terms used in sport, physical education and sport science in order to make sure that the terms used most often and being very important are included in the dictionary. Furthermore, strategies of developing a thesaurus have been used in order to present a well-balanced concept of a dictionary. The dictionary contains relation terms this means that terms described in detail in the dictionary are sometimes also related to other terms of the dictionary which give relevant information. Furthermore one is guided from certain terms to the related term with the extensive description. The dictionary provides the translation of all terms (not the full text) in German, Spanish and French, in an appendix. These terms are listed in the alphabetical order of the respective language (German, Spanish and French) with the English translation next to it. Thus, the needed English term can be looked up easily in the dictionary with the full English description of the term (listed according to the English alphabet in the dictionary). In a separate form (CD) the translation of all terms (not the full text) is given besides German, Spanish and French in the following additional languages: Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Persian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian and Turkish according to the same strategy as for French, German, and Spanish within the dictionary. By including these additional nine languages in an index form it is assumed that there will be a worldwide usage of this dictionary. Thus, it will help to further develop sport as a social subsystem, physical education as a process and sport science as an academic discipline. This dictionary may contribute to a better overall understanding across the world as it relates to sport, physical education, and sport science in the age of internationalization and globalization.
