Abstract

In 2006, the Franciscan nun, Sister Engeltraud Mayer, who has been active in various fields of turnen, sports, gymnastics and dance celebrated her 100th birthday. From 1925 to 1927 she studied at the Bayerische Landesturnanstalt in Munich to become a physical educator. Although she joined her order two years later, she taught physical education at various Catholic schools for over 50 years. When the National Socialists closed down some of these schools, she received a nursing education and worked in hospitals during the war. After the war she continued in her former profession. Sister Engeltraud retired from teaching about 35 years ago, but still is actively engaged in childbirth assistance and gymnastics for pregnant women at a Catholic hospital. In addition to all these activities, her passion is dance. Sister Engeltraud is a woman who has devoted her life to physical activity and her faith. The article will show the difficulties involved in pursuing both, due to certain restrictions from the Catholic Church. But this woman's life also demonstrates that she was able to follow her maxim of a body-soul entity which, in her opinion, is a result of the combination of physical activities and her Catholic faith. Abstract

Nel 2006, la suora francescana, Sorella Engeltraud Mayer, che e stata attiva in diversi campi della ginnastica tedesca (turnen), degli sport, degli esercizi ginnici e della danza, celebrò il suo centesimo compleanno. Dal 1925 al 1927 studiò al Bayerische Landesturnanstalt a Monaco per diventare insegnante di educazione fisica. Sebbene entrasse a far parte del suo ordine due anni dopo, insegnò educazione fisica in diversi scuole cattoliche per più di 50 anni. Quando i Nazionalsocialisti chiusero alcune di quelle scuole, ricevette una preparazione come infermiera e lavorò negli ospedali durante la guerra. Dopo la guerra tornò alla sua precedente professione. Sorella Engeltraud si ritirò dall'insegnamento circa 35 anni fa, ma e ancora impegnata attivamente nell'assistenza al parto e nella ginnastica per donne incinta in un ospedale cattolico. Oltre a queste attività, la sua passione è la danza. Sorella Engeltraud è una donna che ha consacrato la sua vita all'attività fìsica e alla sua fede. L'articolo mostrerà le difficoltà affrontate nel perseguire entrambe, difficoltà dovute a restrizioni da parte della Chiesa Cattolica. Ma la vita di questa donna dimostra anche che riuscì a seguire la sua massima di un'entità corpo-anima, che, secondo la sua opinione, è il risultato della combinazione di attività fisiche e della sua fede Cattolica.
