Abstract

The purpose of this article is to survey a number of case studies that demonstrate the surprisingly persistent historical involvement of players and teams of Chinese heritage in Australian Rules football. While the accumulation of examples drawn from Victoria between 1882 and 1938 may not in itself be sufficient to develop new archetypes of Chinese involvement in sport, it is part of a necessary long-term information-gathering exercise. To this end, discussion of the case studies not only exposes the hitherto hidden and marginalised activities of a particular ethnic group, but it helps to bolster an emerging and expanding research agenda that seeks to examine new evidence and material concerned with the intersections between race and sport.
