Abstract des Autors

In dynamic team ball games athletes have to perceive and process information selectively and efficiently. An important component of this skill is the ability to identify meaningful patterns or relationships between discrete features. The ability to process and recognize this relational information is presumed to be an essential component of anticipation skill. Skilled players are able to recognize a pattern of play early in its evolution, allowing them to successfully anticipate the end result of that sequence. Although there have been attempts to identify the critical time period for information extraction in relatively closed skill situations, such as the soccer penalty kick, it has not been examined using dynamic, open-play situations involving team ball games. In such scenarios, there is continual interaction between the ball, team mates, and opponents making these sequences distinct from more closed-skill situations that involve only the ball and a single opponent. In this paper, the authors bridged this gap in the literature by using a recognition paradigm and manipulating access to perceptual information so that participants must make judgments based on different viewing periods. The authors attempted to identify the important temporal constraints on expert memory in soccer. Aus der Einführung (geändert)
