Abstract

In her contribution the author deals with what motivates Slovak women to perform sports activities. She concentrates on identifying the motives for the need for sports activities, analyses these motives and compares particular motives with the results of earlier research projects. She summarises the findings concerning the factors defining the notion of motivation in its wider as well as its narrower sense. The data on the factors motivating women to perform sports activities have been acquired by using questionnaires. The results of empirical research show that the women who go in for some recreational sport realise the importance of physical activity for their health, which in turn is the basis for being permanently active and creative both at work and in one’s personal life. The results presented here represent an insight into the structure of the phenomena motivating Slovak women for sports. The author assumes that these results will provide information on the dominant character of the motivational factors with regard to the sports activities of women, and can be used for stimulating active participation by women in various sports in their leisure time.
