Abstract

The volume is connected with the results of the reflection on values and cultural patterns present in sport. The included papers have been written within the framework of the international research participated by partners form Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Russia and Poland. The texts included in the book have mainly complementary and comparative, theoretical and empirical, sociological and philosophical character. There are also papers of the pedagogical tone and those concerning the area of sports management. The methodological foundation of these texts is constituted by theories and axiological categories. So it is possible to point out sources, meanings, formations and transformations of various values, archetypes and cultural patterns accompanying various forms of sport. The monograph, regarding a smaller or greater level of generality of the characterised issues, has been divided into two parts. The first of them, entitled "Sport values in the context of European culture", embraces texts presenting the basic axiological issues of sport in the context fo Western culture. They have been considered from the viewpoints typical of philosophy, sociology, pedagogy and ideology. The second part of the volume, entitled "Different faces and patterns of sport", pays greater attention to detailed aspects connected, above all, with a country where a given form of sport is practised and a kind of a researched discipline. It refers, e.g., to the texts concerning Japan, Slovakia or Poland, or specific forms of sports, such as martial arts, extreme sports or competition participation of amateur and professional athletes. The importance of the mass media and organisational problems of sports management have also been stressed in this part of the volume.
