Abstract des Autors

A longitudinal study was undertaken in order to construct the somatic and physical profile of 12.5- to 14.5-years-old greek swimmers of both sexes and evaluate the selection process of talented athletes with regard to their skeletal age. It was found that none of the parameters measured exhibited values which belong to the top 10% of the greek general population scores. The physical and somatic profile of greek young swimmers seems to be satisfactory as derives from the comparison of their somatic features with those of international swimmers of the same age. However, greek young swimmers, characterised as talented, are skeletally advanced, which refutes the previous reassuring statement. The results of this study suggest that any selection system applied on young swimmers should be based an skeletal age, not the chronological, otherwise late maturers will have no equal chance in competing successfully and remain within the swimming event.
