Abstract des Autors

Nigerians, like other Africans are known to be highly rhythmic and have many dances that are now getting mixed up with other dances from other countries and continents. This article looks at dance in Nigeria from historical perspective and advocates folk dance as the start for dance education in the country. Very few educational institutions teach and study dance in Nigeria. However, researches indicate that the potentials of the acceptance of dance in education by Nigerians are very high indeed. Eight problems are highlighted as facing dance education in Nigeria. The most serious ones are funds, the composition of the terminologies and writing of the dance descriptions. It is reported that there is a collection of Nigerian dances that can be easily recorded for analysis and writing. Professional associations like the Nigerian Association for Physical, Health Education, Recreation and Dance (NAPHERD) in the country should be up in arms in "selling" dance to the public and education institutions. Urgent actions in this direction are required to prevent further mixture of dances whereby the originals of these dances are lost. Verf.-Referat
