Abstract des Autors

The author deals with different aspects of contemporary athletics and discusses how they can or should adapt to the changing conditions in society to ensure the popularity of the sport in the next millennium. Particular reference is made to the competition from other newer sports, which may be more attractive to young people; and the fact that live athletics is not interesting enough to spectators. The drive to improve performances ("higher, faster, stronger") should cease to be an end in itself, as there is a limit to what the human body can achieve naturally. Instead, athletes should concentrate more on the aesthetic aspect of their performances, and spectators at athletics meetings should be encouraged to appreciate good technique and physical grace, rather than seeing merit only in a broken world record. Finally, research is recommended, perhaps by the IAAF, into the current situation of athletics throughout the world, to provide a better understanding and a basis for future developments.
