Abstract des Autors

This year's topic was "Successful Training Concepts in Olympic Middle and Long Distance Running: The Finnish and Kenyan Schools of Running". About 150 coaches and athletes came to Berlin to take part in this congress. The highlights of the symposium were the lectures by Father Colm O'Connell, headmaster of St. Patrick's High School in Iten/Kenya, and Lasse Mikkelsson, who is the Finnish National Coach in charge of long-distance running. Father O'Connell described the environmental conditions, training systems and the performance development of Kenyan distance runners, while Mikkelsson talked about training concepts in women's distance running, using the example of Annemari Sandell, the Junior World Cross-country Champion of 1996. These two lectures are included in the studies section of this issue of NSA. These key presentations were supplemented by short presentations by Idriss Gonschinska, who is the men's 800 metres coach of the DLV and personal coach to the German world-class 800 metres runner, Nico Motchebon, and by the German 5000m champion and Olympic participant Petra Wassiluk. Nico Motchebon's presentation concerned speed and strength training for middle-distance runners, and Petra Wassiluk outlined her own performance development in the 1996 season. These 2 lectures are presented following in detail. Verf.-Referat
