Abstract des Autors
Despite the considerable latitude afforded by the rules governing international rowing competitions, the rowing shells used by different countries have evolved to be similar. Modern racing shells are unusually long, slender boats. The task of improving rowing shell performance can be divided into two areas of research. The first is the study of methods for increasing propulsive power. For example, one method of increasing power is the development of an improved oar and rigger configuration that would permit the rower to develop more thrust by better matching the ability of the system to accept power at the force and velocity most efficient for the rower to produce. The second area of research is the study of methods for reducing energy losses in the system. For example, energy losses can result from the mechanical friction of the sliding seat or from aerodynamic or hydrodynamic drag.
