Abstract des Autors

Peripheral nerve injuries in athletes are rare. Musculoskeletal injuries have increased in frequency as our population is more involved with athletic participation. Most peripheral nerve injuries are related to repetitive stresses or direct trauma. An accurate understanding of neurovascular anatomy and mechanism of injury is paramount to the diagnosis and treatment of these injuries. An accurate neurovascular examination and provocative testing is essential to their detection. Clinical suspicion can be supported by electrophysiologic testing, including electromyography and nerve conduction studies. Proper equipment, proper technique, and an understanding of the biomechanics of participation can aid in the prevention of these injuries. The hallmark of treatment should be directed at rest, splinting, physical therapy, and antiinflammatory medications. Occasionally, surgical decompression is warranted to return the athlete to productive participation. Verf.-Referat
