Abstract des Autors

Exercise therapy with a monitored diet in special summer camps lasting several weeks appears to be a sound procedure for reduction of weight and fatness in children and youth as simultaneously the level of physical fitness was improved. Improvement was also established in aerobic power (max O2), economy of work, performance in various sport disciplines (running, swimming, climbing, participation in various games) and reduction of serum cholesterol. Measurements of body composition confirmed that it is imperative that such treatment is commenced as early as possible but definitely prior to puberty when LBM does not decrease during such a treatment regime. In contrast to the methodology described in this study, outpatient treatment is usually not as effective even when the same principles are employed. Best results were obtained when children were able to attend summer camps during consecutive years. This helped in the habituation of diet, exercise and behaviors. A further advantage of the abovementioned treatment regime was the manner in which children embraced the activity program. Children enjoyed the program and were relatively uninhibited in the camp environment compared with the usual conditions throughout the school year. A permanent change in behavior and related positive results during the balance of the school year very much depends on the active support and encouragement of the child's family. Nevertheless, marked improvements are possible for highly motivated young subjects even under the usual conditions of life, provided that a real effort is made to complete sufficient exercise and a suitable diet is adhered to.
