Amino acids are the foundation of protein in the body and are essential for the synthesis of tissue, specific proteins, hormones, enzymes, and neurotransmitters. Amino acids are also involved in the synthesis of energy through gluconeogenesis and regulation of numerous metabolic pathways. Over the last number of years, there has been significant interest in determining the role of specific amino acids on metabolic, physiological, and psychological responses to exercise that may affect acute fatigue and the physiological and psychological responses to intense training. In addition, exercise-induced alterations in specific amino acids have been suggested to be associated with chronic fatigue, overtraining, and immunosuppression. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the potential relationship that exercise-induced alterations in amino acid concentrations may have on central fatigue, overreaching, and overtraining, and moreover, to discuss possible nutritional strategies that may lessen the impact of alterations in amino acid concentrations during exercise on central fatigue, overreaching, and overtraining.
