abstract	Im Zuge der Industriellen Revolution entdeckte man in Grossbritannien um 1840 den Wert einer Politik der oeffentlichen Hygiene, die sich zunaechst im Bau von Schwimmhallen und Badestaetten manifestierte. Somit eroeffnete sich ein Arbeitsfeld fuer Schwimmexperten, die Lehrstunden fuer Studenten oder Soldaten gaben und zumeist ehemalige Flussarbeiter waren. Der Schwimmlehrer entwickelte sich rasch zu einem Profisportler, der neben Lehrstunden durch Siegpraemien bei Meisterschaften oder in Wasser- und Schwimmshows seinen Lebensunterhalt verdiente. Bereits 1837 begruendete John Strachan die 'National Swimming Society' (NSS), die durch Veranstaltungskalender, Rekordlisten und regionale Komitees den Schwimmsport organisierte. Haeufig waren die Profis selbst auch Initiatoren von Wettbewerben und Vorsitzende der Clubs. 1873 erschien die erste Ausgabe einer Zeitschrift, die sich nur dem Schwimmsport widmete und eine Vielzahl von Nachfolgern fand, von denen jedoch nur die wenigsten erfolgreich verlegt wurden. Das Beispiel des Kanalschwimmers Matthew Webb, der fuer die Britten nationale Werte und Tugenden verkoerperte, illustriert den enormen Einfluss einer stetig wachsenden Medienwelt. Erst 1886 etablierte sich der Amateurverband und verdraengte bald durch strikte Reglements die - zumeist auf den Kontinent auswandernden - Profischwimmer. Schmidt
