Abstract

Goals of therapeutic physical exercise training for ESRF-patients are discussed and defined. The Magdeburg Training Program is especially designed for patients with chronic renal insufficiency and takes into account multiple disorders associated with uricemia such as anemia, acidosis, myopathy, polyneuropathy, osteopathy, increased susceptibility to infections and depressive mental state. In contrast to cardiovascular programs, the Magdeburg Training Program focuses on endurance training, particularly aimed at the leg musculature susceptible to atrophy, coordination, aerobic stamina, and general mobility. Patients in training improved cycle ergometer results by up to 100%. Other results include improved blood pressure, more normal levels of serum lactate, and increased volume of muscle mass. The greater muscle mass indirectly resulted in improved bone metabolism and nerve conductivity velocity and decreases symptoms of polyneuropathy. Improved forms of coping and broader quality of life attitudes were also noted. Verf.-Referat
