N2 - Significance of speed and power in addition to the endurance capacity has been increasing in marathon race recently. Therefore, the type and/or the level of physical fitness required for marathon runners might be reconsidered. In the current study, the physical fitness of male Japanese elite marathon runners was examined measuring maximal aerobic power and maximal isokinetic strength (knee extension and flexion). The relationship between these parameters and the best record in marathon run was also investigated. Twelve subjects were marathon runners with the best record from 2ø7'35" (the best record in Japan) to 2ø18'49". Their mean age was 27.2+/-2.8 years old. The maximal oxygen uptake as the maximal aerobic power was measured by using a gas analyzer during exhaustive exercise on a motor-driven treadmill. The inclination of the treadmill was constant at 3ø and the speed was increased stepwise. The maximal isokinetic strength of knee flexion was also measured by using Cybex II at the speed of 5, 10, 30 and 50 rpm. The endurance capacity of muscle was investigated by measuring the rate of decrease in the maximal isokinetic strength during 50 continuous knee extension at 30 rpm. The following results were obtained. 1) There was no significant difference in physical characteristics and resting respirocirculatory function between three groups classified by using their best record as the criterion. 2) No significant difference was observed either for the maximal aerobic power; 72.7+/-8.1 (mean+/-SD), 75.6+/-7.4, and 71.8+/-5.5 ml/kg/min in group A, B and C, respectively. 3) The maximal isokinetic strength of knee extension was greater at each speed in group A than other groups. Same tendency was seen at 5 rpm in the strength per unit cross-sectional area. 4) The maximal isokinetic strength of knee flexion also tended to be greater in group A. 5) Significant correlation did not exist between the maximal aerobic power and the best record. However, the correlation between the maximal isokinetic strength at lower speed and the best record was statistically significant. 6) It was suggested that addition of strength training as well as endurance and speed-related training program might be beneficial for the improvement of work performance in marathon runners.
