To familiarise the subjects with the Cybex, four submaximal practice trials for each test were permitted, and these were followed by a maximal effort. The actual test included five consecutive trials of voluntary maximum isokinetic contractions of the ankle plantar flexors/dorsi-flexors and ankle invertors/evertors. The mean torque values (absolute) of the ankle plantar flexors were 70.44+/-22.94 Nm, of the dorsi-flexors 29.84+/-9.03 Nm, of the invertors 35.49+/-10.04 Nm and of the evertors 25.56+/-7.42 Nm. The corresponding relative values were 1.02+/-0.29 Nm/kg, 0.34+/-0.08 Nm/kg, 0.43+/-0.12 Nm/kg and 0.31+/-0.09 Nm/kg body weight with a plantar flexion to dorsi-flexion ratio of 0.43 and an inversion to eversion ratio of 0.72 at 30ø/sec. Based on the findings of the investigation, the size of the sample and the application of the z-transformation, performance scales (absolute and relative) were drawn up for young and untrained men who have no history of health-related conditions of the ankle.
