Abstract des Autors

One of the last frontiers of science, perhaps its ultimate challenge, is to understand the basis of mentation: how we perceive, act, learn and remember. Injuries involving the central nervous system are often associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Injury to the central nervous system can occur in almost any sport and may involve any level of the nervous system. Mild injuries to the central nervous system are often far less devastating but can result in prolonged cognitive disability and even specific alterations in behavior. Traditionally sports medicine and neuropsychology have been recognized as two distinct and unrelated subspecialties. The potential for cognitive function loss and behavior alterations caused by sporting activities requires the mutual consideration of these distinct subspecialties. As most sports medicine personnel are not sufficiently trained in neurologic care, the management of the neurologically injured or disabled athlete can be problematic. Neurologic/neuropsychologic aspects of sports medicine require special attention. Verf.-Referat
