Abstract des Autors
Is has been known for a long time that long-distance runners have a larger mass of red blood cells (RBC) than untrained subjects. However, the concentration of RBC in the blood is lower. The mechanism of these changes is unclear. Erythropoietin (EPO) is known to be the primary regulator for erythropoiesis. We are particularly interested in the behavior of EPO before and some considerable time after a test marathon run. The elements of RBC reflect the changes of plasma volume. EPO concentration was markedly increased 3 h and particularly 31 h after the run. The long lasting increased EPO concentration in the late recovery period after the marathon run seems to be responsible for the increased RBC mass in long-distance runners. Verf.-Referat
