Abstract des Autors

Two fundamental elements of the idea of sports are performance and health; they have always been important principles in traditional understanding. Performance and health have a close connection: achievement and physical fitness mean and lead to health, and - normally - people, who are in good health, are of a good physical capacity. Some developments in sports and in our body and movement culture lead to a change in ethical principles and in the sense of sport. Performance and health today seem to exclude one another. The transformation of the motive for sports activities and its consequences in the understanding of health in sports show these changes very clearly. In contrast sports science and sports medicine - as part of their scientific responsibility - have to show the right proportions. They have to make clear at which point sports activities stop leading to health, and they also have to show which performances and which strain are needed in order to ensure that sports activities have really health effects.
