Abstract des Autors
The existence of a transient "cardiac fatigue" after long lasting exercise has been discussed controversially. 10 subjects (51 +/- 10 years) were investigated 1 day before (B), 13 +/- 7 min (A) and 3.2 +/- 0.3 h (3A) after a competitive 100 km run (8:07 +/- 1:21 h). The doppler-echocardiography (DE) revealed a significantly diminished left ventricular (LV) diastolic diameter, early transmitral flow velocity, systolic wall strain and contractility at A and 3A. The fractional shortening was lowered at A (B: 37 +/- 4%; A: 34 +/- 4%). Systolic blood pressure decreased from 160 +/- 42 mmHg to 136 +/- 22 (A) and 132 +/- 15 (3A). No significant correlations were found between the changes of DE and heart rate, plasma volume, free fatty acids, cortisol or ammonia, respectively. To interprete the DE measurements, changes of pre- and afterload, e.g. the initially increased BP, have to be considered. In conclusion, the findings are probably of no major clinical relevance.
