Abstract des Autors

The effect of hands and arms in the measurement of maximum back-lift strength was investigated. Twenty-four college males served as subjects. A shoulder harness was used to eliminate the use of hands and arms, and results were compared with the traditional back-lift test (as in the Rogers' P.F.I. test battery). Subjects were given three trials on each of four back-lift tests on four different occasions. Variations in hip angle were determined electrogoniometrically throughout each test. A random administration of test items did not result in significant differences using best scores and average scores of the second and third trials. Adjusting scores for a significant relationship between bakc-lift score and corresponding hip angle for three of the tests did not result in significant differences among the four test measures. Range in hip angle using the shoulder harness technique exceeded that using the traditional technique by no more than 4 degrees. Effective back-lift strength scores were obtained at an average hip angle of 162.71 degrees, with a variation of +/-1 degree for all four methods. Reliability coefficients ranged from .94 to .98.
