Abstract des Autors
This article discusses the effect of altitude on performance in the endurance events. Specific examples are given of the loss of performance experienced by marathon runners, when competing at altitude, and a general indication of the possible percentage loss is deduced from the ruling of USA Track and Field concerning qualifying times for the endurance events at various altitudes. Dr Martin describes these problems concerned with accurate accessment of the degree ofadaptation achieved and gives possible reasons for variations often experienced. He also suggests the possibility of combining altitude training for its hypoxic effect with occacional low level training for maintenance ofspeed. An explanation is given of the general physiological changes occurring as a result of adaptation to altitude hypoxia, together with a detailed definition of the ventilatory and metabolic dynamics of changing altitude. It concludes with a summary of the guidelines suggested for the successful outcome of a programme of altitude training. Verf.-Referat
