Abstract

The effects on superficial white quadriceps (WQ) and deep red quadriceps (RQ) muscle of rats running on a treadmill down a 16 decline at 16 m/min for 90 min were assessed by following postexercise (PE) changes in: 1) Free radical (FR) generation, (by electron spine resonance spectroscopy), 2) Malondialdehyde (MDA) level and superoxide dismutase activities. The data indicate that 1) a sharp new free radical signal (g = 2.001, wd = 0.2 mT) was detected in both WQ and RQ immediately postexercise, and at 3 h and 6 h PE. The new free radical signal still could be detected in RQ but not in WQ 24 h and 48 h PE. 2) MDA and SOD were significantly increased in WQ at zero hour, and 3 h but not 48 h PE. MDA and SOD were significantly increased in RQ at zero hour, 3 h, 24 h, and 48 h PE, reaching their peaks at 48 h PE. The data indicated that tissues with delayed onset muscle damage are associated with FR injury. Verf.-Referat
