Abstract

The ideal fluid replacement beverage for exercise in the heat is one that can simultaneously deliver carbohydrate and fluid with minimal compromise to the other. Current research indicates that a moderately concentrated carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage (4 to 8 carbohydrate) is appropriate for optimising fluid and energy delivery during prolonged exercise and causes no adverse effects. Furthermore, if consumed at a high rate, a carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage can enhance performance in endurance activities. While the ergogenic benefits on shorter duration exercise and the intermittent, high intensity competitive sports are not well documented, carbohydrate-electrolyte replacement also seems to be appropriate for these activities in the heat. The use of more concentrated beverages in the heat is not, however, advisable. Verf.-Referat
