Abstract
Various cognitive strategies are being more widely used to enhance the acquisition and performance of sport skills. Nonetheless, there still exists a misconception that once strategies are learned they can be self-initiated in appropriate situations. The purpose of this article is to emphasize that individuals generally lack the ability to self-regulate; therefore, self-regulation techniques should be promoted through training. Concerns are raised about possible problems in traditional approaches to strategy training and research. Also examined is the relationship between self-regulation and the effective use and training of cognitive strategies. Finally implications for future research and training are suggested. Verf.-Referat
