Abstract

Chromium is important for insulin action and thus for the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. A marginal chromium status may impair the energy metabolism and possibly the physical performance capacity. Hair analysis is a reliable indicator of chromium status. In this pilot study the influence of a training period of four months was studied on the content of chromium in hair in eighteen young cyclists. The chromium concentration decreased from 0.33+/-0.16 ppm, at measure moment 1 to 0.25+/-01.2 ppm at measure moment 4 (p=0.058). The number of subjects with a content of chromium lower than the normal range of 0.16-0.70 ppm increased non-significantly from 6 at measure moment 1 to 29 at measure moment 4. It seems justified to pay more attention on the nutritional intake of chromium during periods of endurance exercise. Verf.-Referat
