Abstract

Little information exists on the young competitive gymnast. There is a great deal of interest in young gymnasts, perhaps due to a concern about the early age at which competitive training often begins and the high incidence of injury, attrition, and burnout that have been documented. Thus, the specific purpose of this study was to replicate and extend the research of Scanlan et al. by investigating the relationships among selfefficacy, competitive anxiety, worry cognitions, years of experience, and performance in young male gymnasts. A subpurpose was to replicate Gould et al.s study of sources of stress in young wrestlers by examining the worry cognitions reported by young gymnasts in preparation for an important upcoming competition.
