Abstract

With the increase of female sport participants over the last 20 years and the adoption of affirmative action guidelines, an increase in the number of minority women in sport could be anticipated. However, the number of minority women administrators, coaches, commentators, officials, athletic trainers, and sports information directors has not increased. This article will determine if Title IX has enhanced or hindered equality for minorities in sport. The National Associaion for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) has identified three distinct groups of women as minorities in sport: ethnic, disabled, and mature women. The authors will address the opportunities for all three groups of minority women in sport and provide recommendations for continued participation and employment in athletic leadership positions. Two types of opportunity will be addressed: participant and leadership. Participant opportunity will be referred to as the openings in athletic participation for play and competition. Leadership opportunity will focus on the availability of positions such as athletic administrators, coaches, and athletic staff. Verf.-Referat
