Fifteen Finnish, 15 Polish, and 13 Thai male students were studied in order to compare populations living in cold, temperate and warm climates, regarding the exercise thermoregulatory efficiency. The students performed a bicycle test at the temperature of 30 +/- 1 deg C and at 72 +/- 2 of relative humidity, either in a climatic chamber (in Finnland and Poland) or at the laboratory (Bangkok, Thailand). Changes in rectal temperature (Trec), heart rate (HR), body weight (Bwt), and hematocrit (Hct) during exercise were evaluated. The work loads were 50-55 of individual maximal loads. The results revealed that the ratio of body surface area to body weight (BSA/Bwt) was higher in Thai than in Finnisn or Polish students, while Bwt, height, and BSA were significantly greater in Finnish and Polish than in Thai students. The levels of Trec and Hct values, both at rest and during exercise, were lowest in Thai students. Mean duration of exercise (DE), during which the rectal temperature rose by 1.2 deg C, was longest in Thai students, but a significant difference was found only between Polish and Thai students. The lack of such difference between Thai and Finnish students could have resulted from a better than expected heat dissipation by sweating, due to regular exposure to sauna by Finnish students.
