Abstract

Chinas existing sports system, formed under specific historical conditions, has the following defects: 1. Excessive reliance on the government sports authorities for the development of sports; 2. Lack of a mechanism by which the strength of the whole nation can be coordinated to meet the challenge of the world; 3. Shortage of financial resources for active self-dependent growth; and 4. Insufficient coordination between scientific research and training. To improve the existing system with a view to building China into a strong sporting nation, the author of this paper suggests that the two major tasks of advancing competitive events and promoting popular sports be divided between the government sports authorities and popular organizations; that the Olympic goals set by the state be taken as the guideline for domestic competitions so as to speed up the development of our strong events; that researches in applied sport sciences be separated from those in basic theories so that scientific researches may be integrated with sports training by giving play to public efforts; and that sports be developed as an industry along the lines of socialization.
