Abstract
Ever since the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964, Japan has made little progress in competitive sports in spite of its high-speed economic development. China, on the other hand, has taken great strides in sports competitions since 1978 although its economy has remained rather backward. In both cases, there has been a striking contrast between economic strength and sports development. This has prompted the author to look into the relationships between economy and politics on the one hand and sports on the other. Making a comparative study of documents and a historical review of sports developments in China and Japan since World War II, the author has analysed these relationships and derived his conclusions from them.
