Abstract

This article is the first in a sequence dealing with health hazards in triathlon competitions and possibilities for prevention. It is the result from a literature survey, combined with data from practical experiences. This first article deals with health hazards related to cold water swimming. Triathlons are organized preferentially in open water. In the Netherlands the temperature of this water rarely exceeds 20 deg. C. As a result a significant number of competitors will drop out, if they dont take proper protective measures. The best protection in cold for a swimmer is his own fat. Since most triathletes have a low percentage of fat, they will almost all benefit from the use of a wetsuit. The effects on speed and thermoregulation of wetsuits of different shapes are explained. The optimal treatment for a hypothermia victim by competition organizers are outlined. Verf.-Referat
