Abstract
Most major rowing regattas in Australia are held between January and April, when ambient temperatures often exceed 30 degrees Celsius. Although individual races typically last only 6 to 7 minutes, rowers are usually ont he water for abouot 30 minutes before their event. Much of this time is spent in warming up. Exposure to hot conditions over a long period elevates skin blood flow, decreasing the amount of blood available for distribution to the active muscles. This could be expected to diminish rowing performance. A study was recently conducted to determine whether cooling of the skin after warm-up but before competition might minimise the adverse circulatory effects of heat exposure, improving work capacity.
