Abstract des Autors

291 Ivorian adolescents of both sexes (158 males and 133 females) were preselected 2 months before a 3000 meter race. Subjects with sickle cell trait were identified by hemoglobin electrophoresis on cellulose acetate at an alkaline and acid pH consistent with the hemoglobin AS genotype: less than 50 hemoglobin S, more than 50 hemoglobin A, and normal levels of hemoglobin A2 and hemoglobin F. The results of the electrophoresis were only revealed at the end of the field test. Only 148 best runners (82 males and 66 females) were selected for the race: 128 of them completed the race and the remaining 20 failed to complete it. Statistical analysis was used to compute means, standard deviations, Student t-test, percentage tests and Wilcoxons non parametric test. No clinical accident was observed in the course of the experiment. Statistical analysis of the results did not show any significant difference in the prevalence of SCT subjects in the preselected group (12), the selected group (11,5) and the general population (12). The hemoglobin S level of SCT subjects who ran (36.5 +/- 3.3) was not significantly different from that of those with SCT who were not selected (37.9 +/- 2.4). The comparison of the percentages of SCT subjects in the group of finishers (10.9) and the group of non-finishers (15) did not show any significant difference. The order of arrival of SCT subjects was not significantly different from that of the control subjects. Moreover, no significant difference was observed between the sexes. Verf.-Referat
