Abstract
This study examined whether a suit of sweat clothing worn during a standard exercise test in cool ambient conditions could evoke similar cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses to those measured in a hot, humid climate. Ten active male physical education students performed a 60 minute interval treadmill running protocol in random order under three different conditions: (1) In light clothing (field hockey shirt, shorts and socks) in cool conditions (LCC); (2) In sweat clothing (tracksuit and spray-proof pants and jacket covering the light clothing) in cool conditions (SCC) and (3) in light clothing (as above) in hot, humid conditions (LCH). The level of the response found in the SCC test, demonstrated that wearing the sweat clothing did provide a significant challenge to the thermoregulatory system, and as such appears suitable for use in field training as a means of providing an artificial heat source for heat acclimation purposes.
