Abstract

The determination of the maximal aerobic and anaerobic capacity of top athletes is still one of the most important tasks of sports medicine. The maximal oxygen uptake is an integral value of the aerobic and anaerobic capacity of a human being in the case of an exhaustive strain, e.g. in 6-12 min. on increasing watt degrees on the bicycle-ergometer or treadmill. However, in recent years there has been increasing copntroversy about the significance of the maximum oxygen debt according to HILL. Many authors still consider the oxygen debt a measure for determining the anaerobic capacity. The difference between the need for oxygen and the uptake of oxygen during exhaustive muscle work is balanced out as oxygen debt in the subsequent recovery period in a time space of at least 30-45 minutes. In our opinion the oxygen debt must not be confused with the oxygen deficit. Oxygen deficit should only refer to the beginning phase of a steady state work and this deficit is balanced out exactly in the essentially shorter recovery period after steady strain. On account of the greater amount of time expended for the determination of maximal oxygen debt (the sum of the additional oxygen uptake in the recovery period up to the attainment of the oxygen value in the anticipatory phase in 1 STPD we looked for a method to shorten the determination of this parameter. As a result we can state that after 5 min. recovery 55-60 of the total oxygen debt is balanced out, and after 10 min. this is 70-75. Verf.-Referat
