Abstract

A model has been designed to predict the flow of recreational traffic between the different development regions within the Republic of South Africa for the different seasons. Recreational traffic is saeparated from non-recreational traffic at certain selected counting stations by means of a Canadian model based on the ratio between the mean traffic over the weekend and mean traffic during a normal working day. A gravitational model was used to obtain the trip matrix from the recreational traffic at these counting stations. This provides a cheap and easy way to obtain a trip matrix, but origin-destination data are necessary to calibrate the model. The results obtained for different time periods are given. The interpretation of the results is done in terms of the unequal geogrpahical distribution of the vehicle population between the different development regions and the large difference in area between the regions.
