Abstract

It is important to have the proper knowledge of the biomechanics of running and variations from the norm in order to successfully treat overuse injuries in the runner. Although clinical experience suggests that various biomechanical abnormalities predispose to injury, no true scientific data is currently available. Clinical experience has shown that, once an overuse injury is present, utilizing a biomechanical approach will facilitate recovery of the injury. Utilizing biomechanical abnormalities to predict injury, however, has been difficult since many factors are involved. In the authors view, it appears appropriate to establish good foot balance and biomechanics once the beginning signs of overuse injuries are noticed. An inch of prevention may prevent miles of abuse.
