Abstract

The influence of different running surfaces on performance have received only little attention in the literature, but it is likely that the surface plays an important role for economy and for performance during running. Examination of the qualities of running must therefore take into consideration the entire system man-shoe-surface. All of these three components have their own physical resonance characteristics, but when acting together the man must respond physiologically to make the best out of this combination. In other words, all these components which contribute to the man-shoe-surface interaction have their own qualities and quantitative contributions in running. When their interference is positive, the running can become effective and efficient. The present report deals with a larger project, the purpose of which is to examine not only the patterns of muscle activation and ground reaction forces, but especially their interaction when shoe, surface, and velocity conditions are varied. Special emphasis is given to the methodological approach, which has been chosen for the biomechanical and physiological test procedures. Three original articles on the project have been present elsewhere. Verf.-Referat
