Abstract

A.J. Sandy Young combines a lifetime of personal and professional involvement in sport with his skills as an historian to produce this tale of Nova Scotian sport. He presents several of Nova Scotias most important sports from the time they first appeared in the Province until the present. Activities which grew naturally out of the colonial frontier, like fishing, hunting, horseracing and boxing, develop in the text from crude catch-as-catch-can recreation to, in some instances, highly organized sports. Heroes abound; but the book is not solely about heroes. The days when shops would close to allow thousands ofNova Scotians to attend aquatic festivals offering: rowing, paddling and sailing are re-loved in all their past splendor. The roots of Nova Scotian winter sports are revealed. Nova Scotia is defended as the birthplace of Canadian hockey. The reader is reminded of Nova Scotian hockey teams playing for the Stanley Cup and Nova Scotians winning curlings Brier and the Tournament of Hearts. The great Nova Scotian team sports of rugby, football, cricket, baseball, softball and basketballhave each enjoyed their time in the limelight and each is given its due. Verf.-Referat
