Abstract

We studied 20 women to determine the effect of carotid palpation on post exercise heart rate and the validity of palpation recovery technique for estimating the actual heart rate. The difference between the exercise heart rate and the postexercise palpated heart rate was significant: the heart rate decreased significantly while the subjects palpated the carotid artery. The difference between the postexercise palpated heart rate and the postexercise subject count was significant. The heart rate decreased significantly when the subjects used the palpation recovery technique to estimate the rate during exercise. Given the importance of the individualized exercise heart rate range for governing exercise intensity, the carotid palpation technique and the use of manually counted heart rate to derive the actual exercise heart rate are questionable procedures when precision and safety are required.
