Abstract

Subjective effects caused by physical exercise practice were investigated by the questionnaire method on 131 members in our sports club aged from 10 years to 70 years (91 males and 40 females) who had regular physical exercise habit (60-90min. duration, 2.5 times/week, for more than 6 months). The questionnaire contained 30 questions, each 10 questions for the physical items, the daily life items and the mental and social items. Further, 34 males and 13 females among the subjects were examined for the relationship between magnitude of the subjective effects and change of the physiological parameters ( body fat and estimated maximum oxygen uptake) measured pre and post regular physical exercise practice for more than 6 months. As a result, the subjective effects were summarized as follows: 1) Psychological resistance against physical exercise practice was decreased. 2) Physical activities in the daily life became easy. 3) The interests in the health and physical exercise were increased. 4) It became to recommend physical exercises to others. And a significant positive correlation between magnitude of the subjective effects and frequency of the physical exercise was observed on the physical items but not on the daily life items nor on the mental and social items. In addition, the subjective effects appeared throughout all items even when there was not a significant change in the physiological parameters such as estimated maximum oxygen uptake or body fat. Therefore, results of the subjective effects may become one of the motivations to continue the physical exercise practice in particular for members who had no significant effects on the physiological parameters. In conclusion, in order to assess the effects caused by physical exercise on the members who have regular physical exercise habit to maintain and/or to improve their health it is important to examine not only the changes in the physiological parameters but also the changes in the subjective effects.
